As expected, on Wednesday evening Apple introduced the sixth generation of the iPhone. The iPhone 5 comes with new features such as a bigger screen, LTE, a new dock connector and other features. At the end of the day, however, the iPhone 5 is nothing more than the logical development of the Apple smartphone – and paves the way for future models. Apple’s co-founder Steve Jobs could hardly have imagined how momentous his keynote at the Moscone Center in San Francisco on January 9, 2007 would be: “And we have invented a new technology called multi-touch, which is phenomenal. It works like magic. You don’t need a stylus. It’s far more accurate than any touch display that’s ever been shipped. … You can do multi-finger gestures on it. And boy, have we patented it!” What followed was the unveiling of the first iPhone.
Since then, cell phones have looked more like gadgets from Star Trek than mobile telephones. The touch screen revolutionized the market in next no time and found many imitators. But it’s always been the iPhone which has continued to raise the bar year after year. And once again, Apple’s iPhone 5 has better spec and performance than its predecessor: it’s got a larger screen, a smaller dock connector, a better camera, iOS 6, and a host of other details that the competition will now have to work their way through.
iPhone 5 is just a transition device
But it isn’t just these modifications by themselves that make the iPhone 5 so successful. It’s the harmonious way it seamlessly fits into the existing Apple orchestra. Although the closed nature of the Apple universe has many detractors, it’s exactly what makes customers keep opting for the iPhone. Apple’s strategy is to create a uniform customer experience spanning everything from hardware and the sale of software via the App Store to the iPhone’s operating system and synchronization via iTunes. Instead of a cacophony of different hardware and software, what Apple has to offer is a symphony of different components.
Apple will continue the iPhone’s success story, which began five years ago. Pre-orders will be accepted for the iPhone 5 from September 14. iOS 6 will come out on September 19, and the new generation of cell phones will be shipped two days later. It definitely won’t be the last.
